Tom McEwen’s Four-Star Horse Dies From Colic

The “broken-hearted” team around British eventing rider Tom McEwen announced on Facebook the death of four-star horse Strike Smartly, called Paddy. At age 12 he died from a colic attack after he had had complications on the weekend.

In 2017 McEwen and the grey Irish horse won the CIC3* in Chatsworth as well as the CCI3* of Camphire. Last year they attended their first four-star event in Badminton, where they showed a good dressage part (25,9), a fantastic cross country round but then suffered a set-back in the show-jumping part. However, they still finished – in pace 27.

The team states on Facebook that it was a severe loss and that they had been sure about the horse’s great future. “He was one in a million, one who gave you his whole heart, whatever he did – and who never wanted something in return except to be fed.”
