For the public TV channels this must feel like a slap in the face: ARD and ZDF will have no live broadcast of the 2020 Olympic Games. Last year the US company Discovery unexpectedly saved the broadcasting rights for the Olympic Games from 2018 to 2024. Discovery and the publich TV channels were not able to come to an agreement concerning the sub licenses. It has been claimed that ARD and ZDF only offered 100m Euro for the licenses for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokio, while Discovery wanted 150m Euro.
Now the Discovery daughter Eurosport will broadcast the Olympic Games in Germany. In Great Britain licenses have been sold to public TV channels. ARD and ZDF explained that Discovery’s claims were more than they could pay with a clear conscience. They were obliged to handle the public contributions with regard to economic efficiency. Eurosport, on the other hand, were overjoyed to be “the exclusive home of the Olympic Games in Germany”.
