Portuguese Team Rider Assaulted at Event

Portuguese dressage and team rider Vasco Mira Godinho was assaulted by the family of Olympic rider Goncalo Carvalho at a national dressage event in Estoril this weekend. According to Equitacao Godinho sustained injuries to his face, had a laceration at his eyebrow and bruises after he was hit with a rod. The rider was treated in the hospital in Cascais. Eurodressage.com reports that Carvalho’s family has been violent before. In 2015 they assaulted two journalists after a report about the positive test result of the horse Batuta. Two years ago they confronted Grand Prix rider Miguel Raloa Duarte in Cascais. The victims never reported an offence.
The owner of Godinho’s horses, Jacoberger, released a statement in which he said he hoped that the people responsible for the attack would receive adequate punishment, both by the courts as well as the equestrian federation, since the attack took place during a public event.
