One almost has to rub one’s eyes while reading it: Great Britain does not have a team at the EC in Gothenburg. Michael Whitaker with Viking and William Whitaker with Utamaro D’Ecuassines will be sent to Sweden as individual riders. Gordon Burton, director of the equestrian sport explained that they wanted to focus the teams on the Nations Cups in order to aim for the goals of 2017 and the WEG 2018. Di Lampard, manager of the show-jumping division, said that the decision had been hard to make but that they were not satisfied with the result of this year’s Nations Cups yet. Therefore a balance between the individual goals of the riders and the national campaigns for championships had to be found, especially in the first year of an Olympic cycle.
