Goldmedal Winner Showgirl Retired

For four years Canadian Yann Candele and Showgirl were a great combination who participated in championships. Now the French mare will be retired at age 17. On March 18 Showgirl had her last competition in Wellington.

In 2011 Showgirl was already one of the top 10 horses at the Pan American games, then still under Jonathan Asselin (CAN) — then the horse had a joined ownership, who gave Showgirl’s ride to Yann Candele in 2013. The Gold de Becourt daughter and Candele attended the 2014 WEG in the Normandy and they were the best pair of the Canadian team (eighth place in the individual rating). One year later they won gold with the team at the Pan American Games in Toronto, thereby getting a slot for Rio 2016.

In 2013, Candele and the mare also became Canadian champions, won the 2014 Nations Cup of Wellington and were placed second at the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Final of Barcelona. Last year Showgirl’s international career was ended and the daughter of John Edwards, who is part of the Watermark Group which owns the horse, took over the ride and also competed her at her last competition in Wellington. The 17-year-old mare will now start her breeding career.
