The Irish wanted to attend the Nations Cup Final in Barcelona with their top squad that won team gold at the EC, but now Cian O’Connor and Good Luck are out of action. The 11-year-old Canturo son seems the have a small shoulder injury and not to feel well. Therefore the Irish rider decided to withdraw the horse, with whom he won individual bronze in Gothenburg, from the competition. “He passed the vet check,” so Cian O’Connor told Horse & Hound, “but after the warm-up he just didn’t feel 100 percent. He must have sustained the injury landing after a fence. The team physio had a look at him and his shoulder was a bit tender. He’s already much better this morning and he was due a holiday after Barcelona anyway -we didn’t plan any indoor shows for him – so it’s not worth risking a horse like that for one more competition. We are just being cautious.”
Therefore the team for Ireland is: Shane Sweetnam with Chaqui Z, Bertram Allen with Moll Malone, Denis Lynch with All Star and Cian O’Connors replacement Shane Breen with Laith.
The Dutch also have a pair with an injury: Aniek Poels and 12-yea-rold KWPN mare Athene by Berlin/Numero Uno will also not attend the Final. Athene sustained an injury when she left the transporter. The Dutch team will start with the following pairs: Jur Vrieling with VDL Glasgow Vh Merelsnest, Michel Hendrix with Baileys, Marc Houtzager with Steerrehof’s Calimero and Harrie Smolders with Don VHP Z.
