“I’ve come to this decision with a heavy heart,” Ande Thieme (GER) said this weekend about the sale of his top mare Contanga. The 11-year-old OS mare has been sold to Greek Athina Onassis. Recently, Thieme and the Catoki daughter finished in seventh place in the Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen. Between the two of them, the pair achieved numerous top-ten placings, among them Ocala (USA), Leipzig and Hickstead. Last year they finished the Grand Prix at Falsterbo in second place and won the five-star Grand Prix of Gijon.
“Seen from a sporting point of view it is a bitter loss; however, I’m responsible for my employees and my family,” the rider said. He further talked about a “wasted opportunity” concerning the European Championships where Thieme had hoped to compete.
